There is a wide variety of accommodation on the island: rural houses or dwellings, apartments, hotels, tourist housing, pensions and hostels.

In relation to the camping areas authorized in La Palma, you can have more information on http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/medioambiente/piac/equipamientos/index.html. Inside the national park there is a camping area enabled to camp close to the Casas de Taburiente, with a capacity for 100 people, which has a small exhibition attended by a guide. In order to camp you must request permission in advance in the branches of the Visitors Centre.

Where to eat

Inside the national park there are no catering services nor picnic areas.

The weather

The island of La Palma has a temperate climate throughout the year, with an average temperature around 20° C in the coastal areas.

In the north-east coast the climate is smoother and fresher, while in the west is drier and hotter. Above 500 m the temperatures are variable and if you are close to 2,000 m, as in some points of La Caldera, you can find snow and ice in winter.

The rough topography of La Palma determines variations in temperature in the different areas of the island. As a result, it is always advised to carry some warm clothes. The trade winds from the north cool the island and the rain is more frequent than in other islands of the archipelago because of the geographical situation.

Rules of Visit

A visit to a national park requires the fulfilment of a series of general and specific standards, whose purpose is to protect the landscape, flora and fauna, the geology and the existing ecosystems.

As set out in the corresponding Master Plan for the Use and Management (PRUG) of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, the actions listed below could pose a serious harm to the natural area:

The introduction, spillage and release of chemicals or biologically active substances in the environment.
Throwing products or wastes of any kind.
The collection of stones, rocks, minerals, fossils or any other type of geological, archaeological, historical or cultural material, except in the cases that are justified by reasons of study.
Practising sports activities without prior authorization, except trekking in the authorized itineraries.
The use of bicycles and motor vehicles, except in the roads and trails open to the public.
Cutting down, uprooting, mutilating, destroying or damaging the plants and collecting or harvesting them.
The liberation of animals, whether domestic or wild.
The use of appliances with remote control and practising hang-gliding, paragliding, using ultralights, balloons, etc.
The deterioration or destruction of infrastructures.
Doing, by any procedure, inscriptions, signals, signs or drawings in the field or in stones, rocks, trees or in the movable or immovable property.
Camping in places that are not authorized.
Emitting noises that disturb the tranquillity of the species and the silence of the natural environment.

When to come

The mild temperatures in the islands throughout the year will allow you to travel in any season.

Visitors from colder countries prefer the months from December to February, a time that is considered high season, to avoid the low temperatures in their places of origin, while domestic tourism chooses the months between May and October. At any time of the year you can enjoy the mountain or the beach, even in the coldest months.

The richness of the flora in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park allows you to enjoy an explosion of colours in the spring months, when flowering occurs for most of the species, while in the winter months you can enjoy the snow-capped summits.

Access

By road, car rental, bus (guagua) and taxi.

Car Rental

At the airport of Villa de Mazo and in the offices of the port in Santa Cruz de La Palma there is the possibility to rent a vehicle, but the reservation should be done prior to your arrival.

You must take into account that, at the height of the Campamento Aula de la Naturaleza del Riachuelo, there is a barrier installed for the control of the traffic, which has access to the interior of the national park. There is a small parking area on La Cumbrecita, limited to 18 places, so that access is controlled from 08.30 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. to avoid congestion. Bus / Guagua

To access the national park by public transport you can use the line or guagua (bus) no. 300, which does the route between Santa Cruz de la Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane. A stop is made at the Visitors Centre, 7 km from the Viewpoint of La Cumbrecita.
