34. INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

The 34th edition of the International Music Festival of the Canary Islands starts on January 11^th  in Fuerteventura, an island that will share this year the series concerts with Gran Canaria and Tenerife. We start with a great production by José Carlos Plaza, a prestigious theater director who has won the National Theater Prize three times. He will stage Ivan the Terrible by Prokofiev, with the narration of the actor José Coronado and the performance of Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra and the Spanish National Choir led by César Álvarez, with Polina Shamaeva, mezzo-soprano and Alexey Zelenkov, baritone.

We will also count on one of the great musical formations of the world, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mto. Pablo Heras Casado, the Spanish conductor with more international projection at the moment. He will be accompanied by the Spanish pianist Javier Perianes, who will perform the Concert for piano and orchestra Nr. 3 by Bela Bartok.

Another guest in this edition will be Vienna Chamber Orchestra with Dalibor Karvay as conductor and soloist. In addition to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, they will perform in La Palma and Lanzarote.

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Guillermo García Calvo and the great Russian pianist Alexei Volodin, who will perform Rachmaninov's wonderful Concert Nr. 2 for piano and orchestra. As we are celebrating the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, they will also perform West Side Story’s Symphonic Dances.

Karel Mark Chichon premieres at the Festival as the new conductor of the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with Pinchas Zukerman as soloist, performing Bartok’s Concert for viola and orchestra.

Visiting the non-capital islands will be Nordic Voices, a magnificent choir composed of six of the best voices in northern Europe, Ensemble Praeteritum, performing two clarinet and string quintets, and the Klengel Quartet, four cellists belonging to the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, who will offer an heterogeneous program ranging from Bach to Carlos Gardel.

We will continue with the project "Follow the Music", in which young music students from all the islands are involved.
