Gustavo Peña

Gustavo Peña, born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, started his singing studies in that city, but moved later on to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he obtained the Degree.

He owns a vast repertoire that includes works from Monteverdi to the music of our days and his concert and opera activity is worldwide recognized.

He has sung with many of the most important orchestras in the world: the New York Symphony, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Israel, Dresden and also the Staatskapelle Berlin, Freiburger Barokorkester, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchester National du Capitole of Toulouse, under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, Frühbeck de Burgos, Charles Dutoit, Alberto Zedda, Daniel Barenboim, Juanjo Mena, Rene Jacobs, among many others.

Among his outstanding recordings are the opera Gernika, by Francisco Escudero, with the Orchestra Symphony of Euskadi under the baton of Jose Ramon Encinar (DECCA), La Vida Breve (Voice of the forge) with the National Orchestra and Choir of Spain under Josep Pons (Deutsche Grammophon) and Misereres, rescued from the archives of the Andalusian musical heritage, with the Orchestra Ciudad de Granada.

Beside the most outstanding Spanish symphonic orchestras he has performed: Haydn's Creation, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Haendel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bruckner's Mass in F, Haydn's Missa in tempore belli, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Das Lied von der Erde by Mahler, Walpurgisnacht by Mendelssohn, as well as various symphonic choral works by Bach, Schubert and Stravinsky.

Antoni Ros Marbà, Victor Pablo Pérez, Pablo González, José Ramón Encinar, E. López Banzo, Maximiano Valdés and Guillermo García Calvo are some of the orchestra conductors who have enriched his career.

Gustavo Peña has participated in the opera seasons of the Teatro Real, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro de la Maestranza, Opera de Bilbao (ABAO), Teatro de la Zarzuela and La Coruña Opera. He has been a stable member of the Staatsoper unter den Linden Ensemble in Berlin and participated in many of the most prestigious international festivals in the world.
